Statement of the Embassy of I.R. Iran in The Hague on the terrorist incident in Kerman - Iran

No. 2 (10 January 2024)

In the aftermath of the terrorist incident that transpired on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in the city of Kerman, Iran, the Islamic State (ISIS) formally claimed responsibility for this egregious act of terrorism. The group made an official announcement through its virtual media, indicating that two of its members executed this reprehensible act by triggering their suicide belts.

According to official authorities, in this incident, 93 individuals have lost their lives, and more than 200 people have been injured. Among the deceased, 14 individuals are foreign nationals.

The incident occurred during the commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the martyrdom of General Soleimani, who was a distinguished figure, renowned for his efforts against terrorism and ISIS. While being on an official mission in Iraq, General Soleimani tragically lost his life through a direct order from the former President of the United States which was implemented by the US army.

The pivotal role and position of General Soleimani in the campaign against ISIS and the ultimate dismantling of this extremist group cannot be overlooked. Additionally, the malicious and terrorist actions perpetrated by ISIS in targeting the mourners of this revered martyr should be recognized as expressions of animosity, anger, and retribution by this group against General Soleimani.

The United States asserts its commitment to combating ISIS terrorism. However, according to some former U.S. officials, the U.S. has played a role in the creation and support of this terrorist organization. It is crucial to note that the occurrence of ISIS terrorist operations in Kerman coinciding with the anniversary of the martyrdom of General Soleimani carries a significant message and warrants attention.

The assertion is that through General Soleimani's efforts, ISIS was effectively dismantled. However, his assassination by the American military has seemingly emboldened ISIS to contemplate revival through the execution of terrorist operations, even targeting civilians. Consequently, it can be argued that the United States, by eliminating General Soleimani, has demonstrated that its presence in the Middle East and its commitment to counterterrorism is more rhetorical than substantive. The repercussions of General Soleimani's demise appear to include the potential resurgence of ISIS, and the ultimate responsibility for such terrorist actions by ISIS is attributed to the U.S. government.

The Islamic Republic of Iran willing to emphasize that the malevolent phenomenon of ISIS terrorism transcends specific nationality, race, or country. Neglecting or downplaying the threat posed by this terrorist group and remaining silent on the support it receives from the United States or others, could lead to irreversible consequences. From the blind terrorism of ISIS there is no distinction between Kerman, Paris, Tehran, Amsterdam or London.
